It's actually a little misleading. The rocket is already supersonic. When it passes through the layer of ice crystals. The announcer then makes the call the the rocket is now supersonic. It was more of a coincidence then anything the it coincided with the announcer saying that the rocket was now supersonic. Very Cool!

I looked up Sun Dog on Wikipedia and here are the results:
